WHY CHOOSE MARK?
Why should Mark earn your vote?
The Board of Selectman serves as the executive branch of Canton’s government. Since each of the Selectman has a full time job, we are supported by a hard working executive office and Town Administrator. Each Selectman has a special skill and experience that they bring to the team.
Some Selectman have experience with Zoning or Planning, others with Americans with Disabilities Act or Recreation. Some Selectman have a wealth of knowledge based on their experience while others are newer to town government and bring a fresh perspective. Based on his background and experience, Mark’s contribution to the Board involves a deep understanding of Town finances and the overall budget process. This helps the Board keep the delicate balance between restoring and adding necessary services while maintaining a reasonable tax rate.
As the past Chairman of the Finance Committee, Mark has a unique and deep understanding of how our Town is run. Mark has worked with the town budget for years and shares that knowledge with the other Selectman when issues face the town.
Mark has worked hard to bring people together. In 2010, following Town Meeting, Mark organized a now-annual gathering of town officials designed to set politics aside and remind everyone that we all live in, and volunteer our time for, the good of the Town.
During his time on the Finance Committee, Mark worked to strengthen the lines of communication with other town boards. He also innovated to help the citizens of Canton be better informed. Starting in 2013, the Town Meeting Warrant included a section titled “On the Horizon” which provides an overview and updates on large spending issues the town expects to have to tackle in future years. Starting in 2014, the Town Meeting warrant also included a section updating the citizens of Canton on pockets of money that are not controlled by Town Meeting, including who controls those dollars and what they may be used for.
As a Selectman, Mark has worked on many initiatives which are detailed (here).
Outside of Town Government, Mark has shown exceptional leadership and service to others, serving as the Scoutmaster of Canton’s Troop 77, serving on several boards at MIT and serving as a leader in the Item Writing Group for the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.
Mark runs his own successful Financial Planning and Asset Management firm in Canton. Not only does this give Mark experience running a business, but it gives Mark the flexibility to be in Canton during the day, during the week to better address issues and attend meetings as a Selectman.
